The temple town with many temples unearthed from the sand dunes. Talakd was capital of Ganga dynasty built by the hunters Tala and Kada. The Vaidyanatheshwara temple is supposed to built by the Chola king Naga Kundala chola and there is a serpent and rings to symbolize this in the temple. There is an interesting story about how Talakad got covered by the sand dunes. As per the archeological department there are 30 temples, 1 Palace and thousands of houses buried under the sand dunes. First temple was opened for the public in 1983 and subsequently more temples were discovered in 1996. This is when archeological department built walls to protect the temples from getting covered during rainy season.

Things to see

There are 6 temples in Talakad. 

  • Main temple being Vaidyanatheshwara and has stone carving on the outer wall. 
  • Arkeshwara 
  • Patahaleshwara, 
  • Maruleshwara which are amidst the sand dunes and down in side the protective walls built to save the temples from sand movements. 
  • Keerthi Narayana temple which belongs to Hoyasala period is under repair. 
  • After visiting the temples one can go to the river banks take coracle ride or play in the shallow waters. river is not in flow creates lot space for picnic.
4km Talakad is Mudukothore which has the Mallikarjuna temple situated on a hillock.

Things to do:

Water flow decreases during summer exposing the water bed. This water bed turns into a picnic spot with snack vendors around. One can take a dip in the water as well coracle rides are on offer.

Getting There
150kms from Bengaluru: 

There are 2 routes. a)Bangalore -46km- Kanakapura (via Kanakapur road) -47km- Malavalli - Talakad : Road is so so till Sathanur. But after that its bad. b)Bangalore - Maddur (via Mysore state highway)-22km - Malavalli - Talakad : Better than first route. From Maddur to Malavalli road is under repair and good discrete patches. Malavalli to Talakad barely road exists. The road we took was Bangalore - Kanakapura - take a diversion just before Malavalli - Gajanur - Chottanhalli - Panditha Halli - Manchanhalli - Belakawadi -21km -Talakd. While coming back Talakad - 4km - Mudukuthore - 4km - Handpost - Take a right - Muttan Halli - 16km - Malavalli - 22km - Maddur - Bangalore

550kms from Chennai: 

If you are taking train or Bus then one reach Mysore from there its 50 kms. There are 2 trains that operate between Mysore and Chennai Cauvery Express and Shatabdi express. Cauvery express is overnight train and Shatabdi is a day trin and takes 7 hours. KSRTC operates 7 buses daily(4 Volvo and 3 Rajahamsa) and Tamilanadu transport corporation also operates daily buses. If you are driving down then its best to come via Bangalore.
